Community
Kitchen

Our community kitchen first started in 2014 in East Vancouver as an in-person event to teach basic cooking skills and healthy cooking on a budget. During Covid, we turned this event into an online service where we delivered Fresh Prep meals to our participants and then cooked the meals together online.

Currently we have moved our community kitchen to in-person, at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House on Broadway Street. This event is geared towards supporting the 2SLGBTQIA+ Seniors and Elders in our community. We use some of the amazing produce that we grow in our Food Forest in Sahalli Garden.

The meals are mostly vegetarian and always have a vegan option. We avoid allergens as much as possible, as we aim towards cooking healthy meal options that are easy to prepare, and for those on a budget. Our program leads all have their Food Safe L1, past experience in kitchens and are eager to teach participants basic knife skills and cooking tips.

For those not wanting to participate in the cooking of the meal, there is a comfy seating area with a fire place and cozy couches. There are games and puzzles available to use while you are socializing or an outdoor area where you can sit.

When the meal is complete, everyone sits down to eat together in a communal feast. The sharing of food is an age-old tradition that brings people together. We try to incorporate all types of styles and cultures in the preparation of our foods and are always willing to take suggestions for new meal ideas or themes.

This community kitchen is a drop-in event geared towards the 2STGD Seniors and Elders partnering with Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House. Participants are welcomed to bring a friend, partner or ally. Please bring take home containers and a bag as we always have extra food and produce to take home.
